The New BMW M5 to Ensure the Safety of MotoGP

BMW’s involvement in the pinnacle of motorcycle racing, MotoGP, is nothing new. For quite some time now, BMW M models, such as the M5, have been the Official Safety Car, while the brand has also been organizing a number of season events together with race organizer Dorna Sports. Now, BMW M GmbH returns with the new M5 as the new MotoGP Safety Car.

Based on the road-going latest-generation M5 that debuted earlier this year, the new BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car retains the bits that give the car the utmost performance. These include the 4.4-liter M TwinPower V8 that produces 600hp and 750Nm, Mated to a new 8-speed Steptronic gearbox, it allows the car to scoot from rest to 100kph in just 3.4 ticks.

Apart from the engine power, the new M5 also gets a new M xDrive all-wheel drive system that optimizes traction on any road surface. It basically acts as a rear-wheel driver yet still provides loads of grip.

Being the MotoGP Safety Car, though, the specially-designed model gets a host of upgrades to help it perform its duty better and in style. Besides the various carbon fiber bits that help save weight and improve drivability, the Safety Car gets stuff like race-derived hood latches, a front splitter specifically designed for the M5 Safety car, the front grille mounted blue LED lights, the corona headlight rings, and the roof-mounted LED flat light panel.

And of course, the new M5 Safety Car is finished in a special livery that gives it a racy look all its own. It actually takes a few styling cues from the new M8 GTE race car, itself set to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans next season.

The new BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car will debut in Valencia, Spain on the race weekend of November 10-12, 2017. It will then see action next season.
