The Mercedes-Benz X-Class is the World’s First Premium Pickup Truck

Around nine months ago, in October of 2016 to be exact, Mercedes-Benz showed off its X-Class Concept pickups. The pair of three-pointed star workhorses gave us a clue as to what it would look like if the brand actually ventured into such a vehicle category.

Well, it looks like we will indeed see a Merc pickup, as the German luxury carmaker just launched the ne X-Class premium pickup. The Mercedes-Benz X-Class comes in no less than three variants for buyers to choose from: the base Pure, the mid-spec Progressive, and the top-of-the-range Power. Each one offers clients a blend of rugged style and sophistication in various levels of rugged luxury.

So what does a Merc pickup truck look like? From the front, it possesses a grille and headlamp design that takes its cue from the brand’s own SUV line. This gives it that macho yet handsome appeal with a flair of elegance to boot. The side, which is virtually unchanged from the concept truck, can be with roof rails and step boards. And the rear is typical of a pickup, albeit done in a clean and simple manner, complete with a wide opening tailgate.

The interior is where Mercedes-Benz made occupants feel like they’re still riding a Merc—despite the rugged vehicle type. One can choose their seat materials and cabin trims—including premium leather. The unique four vent dash layout is matched by a nicely integrated floating touchscreen, which can be spec’d as large as 8.4 inches. The driver likewise gets a bright 5.4inch display where all pertinent driving data is available at a glance.

Just like the trims, the new X-Class will be offered with a variety of motors. There is a pair of 2.3-liter diesel mills with either a single turbocharger that puts out 161hp and 403Nm (X220d) or the X250d with its twin-turbo version of the said engine with a more potent 188 horses and 450Nm of twist. There will also be a range-topping X350d variant whose V6 lump belts out 255hp and 550Nm. And gas engine lovers can expect an X200 iteration with 164hp.

Each of these mills will be paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed 7G-Tronic gearbox. This will come with either rear or permanent all-wheel drive. Being a pickup means it has a long 3,150mm wheelbase for surefooted all-round performance. Towing capability is rated at 3.5 tons while hauling 1.1 tons of cargo should not be a problem. Plus, Mercedes-Benz has fitted it with front double wishbone and rear live axle with coil spring suspension all around. This setup ensures ruggedness while still providing a plush ride befitting its badge.

The Mercedes-Benz X-Class pickup will go on sale in Europe later this year. Other markets will follow early next year.
