It was late last year when Mercedes-AMG wowed car nuts with the E63 AMG sedan. That car combined the swoopy lines of the latest generation E-Class with the potent power of the AMG drive—hallmarks of the two brands for decades now.  In true Mercedes-AMG fashion, however, the vaunted wagon version follows, giving family men the chance to drive to their heart’s delight while still carrying their precious ones on board.

From the get-go, enthusiasts can easily tel the Mercedes-AMG E63 wagon apart from the regular car, thanks to details like a sportscar-like hood, and glossy front flics and large splitter that aid in aerodynamics, as well as giving the estate a sporty vibe. The side sills give the car more depth as it makes it look like it sits lower to the ground. And the rear features the trademark high-gloss twin tailpipes for the ultimate racy attitude.

What makes this car special, however, is its penchant for versatility. The cargo area, for instance, is the largest in the performance wagon category at between 640 to 1,820 liters. This is made even more flexible with a 40/20/40 split-folding rear seatback and a ton of tie-down hooks and cubbyholes. That seatback can even be reclined at an angle for those times when you’d want to snooze out on the open road.

This being an AMG model, however, means that there is potent power waiting to be unleashed. The 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 in the E63 4Matic+ wagon puts out 571hp and 750Nm. Mated to the AMG Speedshift MCT 9-speed sports transmission, the family hauler scoots from rest to 100kph in just 3.6 seconds. Those that think this isn’t enough can go for the E63 S 4Matic+ wagon, with the same 4.0-liter direct-injection twin-turbo, this time, putting out 612 horses and 850Nm of torque. This one likewise gets the 9-speed AMG Speedshift box, making for a 3.5-second run to the century mark. Both cars benefit from the AMG Performance 4Matic+ permanent all-wheel drive system.

The straight-line speed is complemented by the AMG Dynamic Select system that allows drivers to dial in either Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus, or Individual settings to suit their driving style. This alters everything from steering, suspension, engine, tranny, and even all-wheel drive for true personalized performance. Thus, you can go from mild-mannered family man to motorsport hero at the flick of a switch.

Moreover, you’ve got the safety gear to do all this. Yes, Mercedes-AMG naturally fitted the E63 and E63 S 4Matic+ wagons with the latest safety gear and driver assist technologies. Stuff like lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and more are there for your peace of mind. Plus, goodies like differential locks (electronic for the S version) aid in giving you more fun behind the wheel-while keeping safe, of course.

The Mercedes-AMG E63 and E63 S 4Matic+ wagons somehow give new meaning to the phrase “having your cake and eating it, too”. With these cars, it looks like eating cake will truly  be fun.
