Going on a Road Trip This Holy Week? You May Want to Prepare More Than Just Your Car

Unless you’ve been hiding under your favorite rock, you’re most likely aware that Holy Week is upon us. .What this essentially means is that many of us are going on a long road trip. If you’re not one of those taking a staycation in a virtually empty Metro, then we suggest you prepare a few things to make the journey a bit more pleasant and hassle-free.

We’re quite sure you know that it is very important to check your vehicle to ensure it is in tip-top shape. You may have even memorized the checklist by now. Just the same we can’t emphasize enough checking things like:

  • Battery: See to it that it is fully charged
  • Lights: Are the headlights, taillights, signal lights, and all other bulbs working?
  • Oil: Are the engine oil level and other vital fluids topped up? Maybe now might be a good time to flush out the system and refill with clean fluids.
  • Water: Just like engine oil, is your cooling system in need of water and coolant mix? Are the hoses in good working order without any leaks or cracks? Are those belts tight enough and free of cracks or frays?
  • Brakes: Are these in good condition? Do they stop the car properly?
  • Air: Your tires are the only contact you have with the road surface. So make sure they are properly inflated and free of cuts and other damage.
  • Gas: Fill up to ensure that you won’t run out en route to your destination.

Yes, BLOWBAG is the simple acronym to help us prepare for those long out-of-town road adventures. Yet did you know that it is equally important to prepare the other part of the equation—the person behind the wheel? That’s because a lot of road mishaps are caused by driver error or fatigue.

To ensure that this won’t spoil your Holy Week trek (or worse), it would be best to:

  • Rest up for the journey: A good night’s rest is definitely a must. Also make sure that you aren’t feeling anything that could impair your reflexes. Being fit will help you stay alert on those long drives. And if you do get sleepy along the way, stop even for a few minutes in a safe place to take a quick power nap. It will help you get back on track.
  • Load Up: We’re talking abut you, the driver, filling up on food and staying hydrated. Bring along snacks and water to help you stay charged while on the move.
  • Plan your route: Part of the fun of a road trip, they say, is the journey itself. Plotting your route helps ensure that you’ll get there in the fastest time possible without necessarily speeding up. This means avoiding traffic and other bottlenecks along the way. And with GPS, this is now a cinch.
  • Patience is a virtue. Sure, you want to get to your destination as soon as possible. And maybe, your ride packs a gazillion horses under the hood. But these are no excuse to drive like a maniac. Simply observe road rules. Keep a steady cruising speed. And don’t treat the road like your private racetrack. Be mindful of other road users.
  • Enjoy the trip: This is probably the most important thing you can do. Just relax. You’re on vacation, remember?

Whether you’re headed for the beach or a mountain getaway, always remember the meaning of these Holy Days. While it’s okay to enjoy, let’s not forget to pause and reflect even for a moment on what He did for us, His sacrifice that is all done out of love for us.

Have a Blessed Holy Week, evewryone.  And Happy Easter!
