It has been a tough ride for old Setafano Domenicali. He was given some mighty big boots to fill after the dream team stitched up 5 world championships in a row, and now he's hanging up his own boots after another poor start to the season.
Under his leadership, Ferrari came within a whisker of the driver’s championship in his first year in 2008, but walked away with the constructors thanks in part to an under performing Heikki Kovalainen.
But it was a dismal 2009 season and a bungled up strategy in Abu Dhabi that cost them the 2010 world driver’s championship where the cracks really started to show.
Luca de Montezemolo famously admitted to smashing his flat screen TV in frustration after seeing Alonso’s strategy compromised because they were only watching and reacting to Webber’s strategy. Add that to the delayed decision to replace Massa with someone more capable of stealing points from Alonso's nearest rivals, and you can probably throw in 2012 as another missed opportunity.
He will be replaced by the former head of Ferrari USA, Marco Mattiacci. And many feel it is not a moment too soon.
