Two of Asia’s top junior drivers recently joined the Porsche Motorsport Junior Programme Shootout. Young Singaporean Andrew Tang joins Zhang de Sheng in Germany as they prepare for the prestigious Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup next season.
The winner of the Shootout will receive a 200,000 euro scholarship that will prepare him for the grueling yet prestigious event. Andrew Tang has been chosen to represent the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia while de Sheng was a wild card entry into the event. Both drivers will join the ranks of 2015 Le Mans winner Earl Bamber.
The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia is powered by two world leaders in the field of automotive lubricants and tires. Mobil 1 makes some of the best lubricants around, while Michelin serves up really grippy performance rubber for both road and track. Together, the partnership has brought the entries to victory.
And the car that made it all possible is the latest Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. Based on the seventh-generation 911 (Type 991), its 3.8-liter boxer six-cylinder motor develops 460hp at 7,500rpm, transferred to the rear wheels via race clutch and a six-speed dog-type gearshift. Plus, this is the first Porsche race car that uses steering-mounted paddle shifters for easy operation.
The new car, which was first seen in 2014, is wider for better stability. It likewise utilizes safety gear like a more rigid roll cage, new racing seat, and a roof-mounted rescue hatch makes quick escapes during critical moments much easier.
All, told, we can expect really exciting races from Porsche.
