So how did the Isuzu RZ4E motor perform on a 1,000km drive?

It’s no secret that when a new product is introduced in the market, people are usually concerned about its performance. Take the new RZ4E BluePower diesel motor from Isuzu. Sure, the Japanese commercial vehicle maker is best known for diesels. But this is a totally new offering for Isuzu.

It seems, however, that the motor can definitely hold its own as it was subjected to a grueling 1,000km trek from Calamba, Laguna to the island of Catanduanes recently. The mu-X Owners Philippines (muxOP) took the long drive with 20 mu-Xs units loaded with family and gear from April 27 to May 1. And there were two mu-X LSA units—one AT and another MT—powered by the 1.9-liter RZ4E mill that tagged along for the ride.

Driven by members of the motoring media, along with representatives from Isuzu Philippines Corporation, the two BluePower-driven units joined the convoy that started off from KM44 Petron station along SLEX in Calamba. They then drove all the way to the Tabaco Port in Albay where they got on a Roll On-Roll-Off (RORO) ferry heading for the San Andres Port in Catanduanes.

Once on the island, they went around the 150km loop that took them to some of the most scenic spots in the country. All told, the mu-X units drove through various types of terrain, from long straights to twisty bends and steep inclines.

Despite the grueling drive, everyone noted how well the mu-X performed. The RZ4E BluePower diesel-equipped units, in particular, were more than up to the task. Even with a full load of passengers, camera gear, and pasalubong, the SUVs kept pace every step of the way. And they returned a fuel mileage reading of 17.63km//L for the AT and 14.37km/L for the manual version.

Of course, only time will tell how well this powerplant will hold up. But by the looks of it, it should hold up quite nicely.
