It may have taken just over a month and 12,844 signatures, but LTFRB Chairman Winston Ginez, has promised to implement the mandatory installation of speed limiters on all busses and trucks in Metro Manila.
“We are now in talks with suppliers to find the best technical solution, although in principal, this is already a done deal.” The chairman told reporters from both GMA 7 and ABS CBN who had come to cover this historic moment.
“In fact, some bus companies like 5 star and Victory liner have already installed the speed limiters on their own initiative and have reported a huge drop in accidents.” The chairman continued.
Although they have yet to choose a supplier and need to follow the prper bidding process, one supplier has indicated that a speed limiter costs $180USD before duties and taxes, or about half the price of one day’s boundary for a bus driver.
The LTFRB are also looking into the most cost effective way to implement the use of GPS trackers that connect to a website that sends of an alarm when a bus goes over the 80km/h limit, to alert them to unscrupulous companies that may tamper with the system.
